As part of the The Phantom Rite showcase by artist Mzung Nguyễn, Gate Gate Gallery is pleased to host an Artist Talk session titled “The Phantom Rite: Material as Witness,” taking place on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

In this talk, Mzung Nguyễn will speak in-depth about her artistic practices, particularly her concerns during the processes of archiving and rendering spectral objects a license to documentation, as well as the conceptualization of "The Phantom Rite."
After over a decade of deploying documentary and experimental filmmaking as primary mediums for her observations of cultural ruptures, Mzung has branched out into visual art in recent years. Her turn to collage art and mixed-media calls upon attention to the shortened lifespans of receptacles, marking her first solo showcase in 2022.
With her current showcase The Phantom Rite, Mzung explores “ritual” in the context of enduring Vietnamese folk practices, to gesture at how one might imagine archiving, reconfiguring and thus also prolonging the lives of discarded objects.
