Vũ Đức Trung (b. 1981, Hanoi) graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Art with a Master’s degree in Traditional Lacquer. For his entire career, he has been experimenting with natural lacquer, treating it as a sacred material to elaborate his ideas of fictional landscapes based on daily emotions and observations of his surroundings. Trung believes material and color can be understood differently, choosing to respect the nature of the material and rather than try to overpower (control) it, to listen and follow it. Selected exhibitions include: ‘Lacquer is lacquer’, Vietnam National Fine Arts museum, Hanoi, 2018; ‘The silence of the angels’ (solo), Dong Phong Gallery, Hanoi, 2016; ‘AIA Vietnam Eye’ (group), Casa Italia, Hanoi, 2016; ‘100 years later’ (solo), Dong Phong Gallery, Hanoi, 2015; ‘Imaginary land’ (solo), Mai Gallery, Hanoi, 2014.
With Vũ Trung, lacquer is more than just a companion, but also an object that helps Trung perceive himself and the surrounding world. Through the utilization of natural materials, particularly lacquer, and by harnessing its unique properties of solidification and transformation over time, Vũ Trung engages in a dialogue with the subject he follows (nature). He seems to find the ,,roots" in the endeavor to capture subjects that resonate with the eternal.
